The Dawn Redwood, Larch, Bald Cypress, and Pond Cypress are members of the deciduous conifer family. They make very good material for bonsai trees because some grow very fast, some have excellent bark, and all produce uniquely shaped and colored foliage.

  • One excellent way to thicken a Larch trunk (or just about any tree species) is to grow it in the ground for a few seasons, Japanese Larch will actually thicken quickly as will many other species you use field growing techniques with.

  • @severusjsnape Even in nature, they are thinner than most trees. Growing any tree in the ground is always an option. So if someone wants to go that route they can.

I didn't want to thicken the larch trunks though, I initially started styling it to look very tall, thin, and sparse. But later I saw a twin trunk larch which was more bulky. I will have to decide which style I like better soon.

  • Have you seen anybody try a bal cyp in a sealed flat pot? I live in south Florida. Will it make "knees"? If you could speak about the subject if you can. Thanks

  • @BigbunnySSS Unfortunately I don't have a bald cypress bonsai...

But yes, I have heard that some bonsai hobbyists keep bald cypress trees in small tubs of soil and water until their roots grow.

Bald Cypress will not grow knees as bonsai. Some folks try to bend up roots to look like them but it's not the same.

  • @berobinson82 The colors the trees have in the second part of the video are the fall colors. I remember early in the year when I first got them thinking they would go from green to yellow to orange to brown.

It turns out they don't turn brown, but yellow OR orange and then fall off.
