  • This is a superb aria for mezzo and bass cello solo, by far the best piece in this opera. I have not been a particular fan of Barbieri, finding her voice too brusque and low in coloratura and Verdi roles, but here she is magnificent, rivalled only by the great Giulietta Simionato in 1961. The plangent, weeping tone, ascending chromatic scales, excellent intonation, well-paced tempo, clean attack, the voice dripping with sorrow and loyalty...outstanding!

  • Yes your taste is magnificent ! The rendition with Fedora Barbieri AND Cello is the most beautiful version of this aria. (Conductor was Vittorio Gui, Firenze 1953).

    Best, Imogene
