Floyd Fernandes http://www.youtube.com/user/fcubic Floyd Fernandes playing is an amalgamation of all his influences from John Coltrane, Allan Holdsworth to Scott Henderson and all the great musicians he's been fortunate to have heard. Unusually for such a sophisticated level of technique Floyd has had no formal music schooling and knows very little music theory. Learning music by ear and instinct and being able to visualise his music, seeing colours on the fretboard, being free and creative and play from the heart, all the time. Floyd says: Yes I see the fretboard entirely when I play and this is an aural map because I see scales as completely distinct colours. More surprisingly is that Floyd is not a professional guitar player but a highly skilled Electronics Engineer specializing in high end studio gear.

  • is it me or he has weird finger movement?

verry nice player anyway, flawless technique, but i think he should be a little more original, he's tone and style are to holdsworth-esque

  • he can actually play any style... I asked for some legato fusion...

  • It's not. He obviously has plenty of theory behind him. Just because you didn't learn it from school or books doesn't mean you don't know it. Sorry Laurie, but your claim that he knows very little music theory can't possibly be correct. I've heard someone claim Holdsworth doesn't know theory simply because he doesn't read notation, but harmony, melody meter, etc function regardless whether you read notation or not. This guy knows intervals, scales, harmony, rhythm, etc, to the bone.

  • Lauriemonk, you say Floyd is not professional ...meaning he's not making any money out of his playing, right?

The guy is a genius ....

I've never seen something like that.

Came here after seeing how he plays Scott's style, but with with this Holdsworth stuff he totally shocked me.

The guy is really a genius..

  • who have commented on this post might have not even conducted half the number of clinics that he has conducted all these years!!!! this guy is a goddamn humble person and he was just being modest telling ppl around that he does not know music.... actually he is one of the few ppl who have been acclaimed as ppl who made a mark in music by allan holdsworth himself...... so you can speak low of this guy if you really have that title in..........

  • @Gregorypeckory

It is correct, he can't possibly know music theory.

If you use your ears, you'd notice he's not playing over the changes.

His technique is good but he has no idea what he's doing.
