Very underrated period for Bowie. I think it had something to do with the time period...everyone expecting too much and too little from the Duke. But the hard sound--even with all Gabriels' indulgences--was refreshing to me. And they ROCKED in concert!!

i think bowie really wanted this to be a big hit, must of broke his heart when it did,nt really do anything, especially after all the promotion he did for it. i remember the second tinmachine album being a complete flop commercially,even his most loyal fans did,nt bother with it, i don,t think bowie ever recovered commercially after tin machine, although he tried in vain with the album black tie white noise.

THE TWEEZER THING -- A nod to the movie THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH, wherein the Thin White Emperor (Far higher than a duke!) portrayed an alien. In said movie, Bowie's character took a tweezer to his eyes to remove the cosmetic contact lenses that were part of his humanoid disguise.
