They took the elevator up to the 10th floor. Nick lead the way to his room, and quietly opened the door.
- My brothers are probably asleep, he whispered, so please don't make any unnecessary noises.
Victor and Mike dragged Mr Portman towards the couch, where they laid him down. And Roxanne soon found a blanket to cover him up with.
Once Nick was certain that his guest was comfy, he signed to the rest of the group to follow him outside, into the hallway.
- Just wanted to say thanks, ... and goodnight, began Nick.
- Hold on, said Victor. Mind explaining all this to us?
Nick raised an eyebrow. - Uhm Explain what?
- Well you said we could ask questions later, smiled Victor.
- Yeah, sorry what would you like to know? Nick said, folding his arms.
- First of all, have you been with this man all night?
- No I just found him lying in the street.
- But you know him
- Yes, so?
The man shrugged his shoulders: - It's a strange coincidence and may I ask what you were doing out, alone, at this hour?
- I dont see how thats relevant I was just coming back to my hotel.
Victor sighed. - Where were you coming from?
Nick made a fist, this was really irritating for him. He felt like such an idiot in front of the girl, like a trouble-maker child who was being scolded.
- If you really must know I was at the club she was playing at, answered Nick, turning to Roxanne.
The girl smiled and looked away. Victor was satisfied.
- Im sorry, Nick, but I had to ask these things. You understand that to me it seems strange when I see a boy trying to pick up a drunken man off the street, and take him back to his hotel room?
Nick, though rather embarrassed, didnt hesitate to answer. Yeah, I suppose it SEEMS strange. But his daughter is a very good friend of mine, and I couldnt just leave him there.
- I understand, said Victor, and I believe you. Glad we could help. I guess well see you tomorrow at breakfast?
- You mean today, smiled Nick.
- Haha thats right, I forgot the time oh my well .. Goodnight, Nick!
- Night! Said Mike, following Victor down the hall, towards the elevator.
- Good night, said Nick, while thinking "Why isn't SHE leaving with them?"
Nick was left facing Roxanne, she didnt seem as eager to leave as the others. And they didnt seem at all concerned with her choice to stay behind. Nick put his hands in his pockets and raised his eyebrows.
- So did you like it? Asked Roxanne, with a fake shy, schoolgirl voice. She had decided to give this flirting thing a try Anyone could see that Nick was into her. It was a safe ground to play on.
- Did I like what? Of course Nick was completely lost, but not in any hurry to get away from her.
- My singing, she hinted.
- Oh! Your singing! yeahit was very nice!
Nick put on his nervous smile, but she took it as a fake one. Her own smile dropped, and her eyebrows narrowed.
- I know Im not a pro Im still learning of course, she stammered, with a touch of annoyance in her voice.
Nick picked up.. and tried to erase the confusion.
- You knowfor a rookie, you play very well. Do you write all your songs?
Roxanne smiled at the word rookie. Yeah..
- Impressive Nick nodded and gave his irresistible, cool, confident smile. And are they inspired by your real love stories?
She laughed, and Nick took his hands out of his pockets. No more sweaty palms.
- Not all of them some are inspired by friends stories, she said.
- Ah. Nice.
Then Nick had an idea.
- Are you busy tomorrow? He asked.
- Uhm No
- Cause I play guitar too (and the drums, and the piano, he thought). If youd like maybe we could, I dunno, spend the afternoon just playing random songs together?
Roxanne tried to compose her laugh. The question was cheesy, but she was so close to making her first friend in this town, that it didnt bother her at all.
She let out a little giggle though, and Nick realized how silly he must have sounded. He didnt let it show, but before he could think of a way to rephrase his question, Roxanne answered : - Sure, well see what youve got!
They were both amused now, and for very different reasons. Nick had never thought hed ever have to prove his talent to anyone ever again. And Roxanne didnt think for a minute that he was seriously into music. But she liked to play along with boys and their silly excuses to spend time with her. And there was also something about Nick that made her curious. One minute he could seem so adorably lost, the next he was irresistibly in control. Either way, she wanted to see him again, and couldnt wait for the sun to rise.
- Then Ill see you at breakfast, said Nick.
- Kay. See ya.
She turned on her heals, and Nick watched her as she headed to the elevator. He didnt forget to quietly push the handle to his door, and tiptoe his way into bed.
"Great", he thought, " where's my blanket?!"
