"Getting Played" is a documentary about discrimination in the entertainment industry. This first trailer highlights Los Angeles listings taken verbatim from the popular casting resource ActorsAccess.com. The opening quote regarding inclusive casting "unless otherwise specifically indicated" is from an NBC/Universal Life Casting, July 10, 2008 posting which lists specs for 14 roles: 50/50 male/female; 50% Caucasian; 36% not racially specified. While this "Getting Played" trailer quotes listings that represent in toto 52% male, 37% female, 11% with no gender specification, and 45% White, it is important to compare these numbers to actual casting figures (tabulated by the Screen Actors Guild) and population data. Reported by SAG: more than 72% of all acting roles go to Whites; 62% to males. Compare Los Angeles 2006 Census: 29% White; 49.5% male. Note also that while Latinos make up more than 47% of LA's population, they are cast at no greater than 6.3%, and Asians - 13% of LA's population - are cast at no greater than 3.4%.

"Getting Played" is available for viewing at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuCvHUBECUI -- music, scoring, and editing by Kathleen Antonia.

  • Thanks for the 1, 2, 3! I absolutely agree with the interesting ratings/no comments business and hope that this year leads to solutions. ... and I've added composer info as requested ... but guess who it was. !

  • I think Entertainment Business, although able to change the way people perceives race, age or that stuff, would always prefer keeping their business safe, by giving to the audience exactly what they like or were taught to like.

I think everyone keeps their preferences for what is considered atractive or pleasant , no matter how hard the media is hammering with another message.

Accepting diversity also means accepting that there are different degrees of tolerance.

  • #1. Almost 8,000 views and NO comments says something powerful to me, YOU are stirring something up! Let this be the year for these conversations and SOLUTIONS! #2. The music is gorgeous - may I suggest adding the composer to your "more info" thingee =). #3 - YOU ROCK!
