Hanoi, Vietnam
8 April 2010
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo arrived today at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam and went directly to the National Convention Center (NCC), where she will join the other Heads of States of ASEAN member-countries at the 16th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
During the conference, the Philippines is expected to push for climate change initiatives as well as for the signing of the open skies agreement that will open the liberalization of the Southeast Asias aviation markets. The country is also expected to seek the support of the Southeast Asian community to the Philippines presidency in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference in New York this May, and its offer to host the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights secretariat in Manila. The AICHR was created during the 12th ASEAN Summit in Cebu in 2007.
In her departure statement at NAIA Terminal II this morning, President Arroyo said that the Philippines interests are focused on four areas: connectivity, climate change, cooperation in sustained recovery and development, and care for migrant workers.
President Arroyo is also expected to meet with her Malaysian counterpart to discuss the peace agreement between the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
