Mahalo biology expert Mary Poffenroth talks about the human body's blood cells.
Blood cells of the human body, along with plasma, make up blood. Blood is found in everyone: 1 to 1.5 gallons of it per person.http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/blood.html# Blood cells comprise about half the volume of blood.http://www.webmd.com/heart/anatomy-picture-of-blood These cells are produced in the bone marrow and consist of
three types: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Each of the blood cells has a different function. The study of these cells can help doctors in diagnosing and treating diseases. Blood tests include complete blood counts, blood cultures, Coomb's tests or others that a specific disease may require.http://www.webmd.com/heart/anatomy-picture-of-blood?page=2 Blood conditions that involve an imbalance of blood cells include lymphoma, anemia, stroke and heart attack.http://www.webmd.com/heart/anatomy-picture-of-blood
Red Blood Cells
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Red blood cells make up 45 percent of the
volume of blood and are the most numerous of the blood cells.http://www.hematology.org/Patients/Blood-Basics/5222.aspx Their
biological name is erythrocytes, and they appear as bright red disks that are
concave on both sides. Red blood cells are very flexible so
that they can fit through all the various-sized vessels throughout the body. The red blood cells functions as carriers. With the help of the
hemoglobin attached to them, the red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to
all the areas of the body. They also carry carbon dioxide back to the
lungs so it can be expelled. The test
used to determine the number of blood cells in the body is the hematocrit.http://www.mahalo.com/learn-biology-blood-cells-of-the-human-body/edit/
White Blood Cells
---------------------------------------------------------------------
White blood cells are larger than red blood cells and are not very
numerous in the body until a person becomes sick. The biological name for white blood cells is
leukocytes. The white blood cells fight
infection in the body that may be introduced from outside sources. They also attack mutated cells or tumors
within the body. White blood cells also
make antibodies in response to bacteria and viruses.http://www.hematology.org/Patients/Blood-Basics/5222.aspx Types of white blood cells
include granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes.http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/blood.html#
Platelets
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Platelets
are the third type of blood cell, and may be called thrombocytes.http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/blood.html# Platelets are small pieces of cells that
float in the plasma of the blood. When a part of the body is injured, the platelets will help reduce and
stop bleeding by gathering at the site of the injury. Once the platelets in the area reach the site
of the injury they release chemical signals which will bring other clotting
factors.http://kidshealth.org/kid/talk/qa/blood.html# If there are too many platelets
in an area, unnecessary clotting can occur. The result of this may be heart attacks or strokes.http://www.hematology.org/Patients/Blood-Basics/5222.aspx If there are not
enough platelets in the body, a simple cut could result in the loss of a
dangerous amount of blood.
