Star Portraits with Rolf Harris (2004) is where a group of three professional portrait artists are assigned the task of painting a celebrity from life using their preferred style. The star then decides which portrait to take home with them.

On 18 January 2004, antique dealer and celebrity, David Dickinson was the subject. Three artists were asked to paint a portrait of David from a personal sitting including Andrew James RP. Weeks later the finished results were unveiled at The National Portrait Gallery and David was asked to choose his favourite, which he was allowed to keep. Andrew James' painting brought a tear to David's eye as he was confronted by a striking likeness to his Mother. The portrait now has pride of place in David's home.

Many thanks for your generous comments. Andrew James

  • @AcutePorphyria I wont go into detail, I'll just use a very simple and loose way of what they mean, say a person seems to have a happy fun personality, and is warm in heart, You might paint them with maybe a lighter, brighter, warm palette. But if you feel that a person has a hard personality you'd prob paint them a bit cold with tones that are cold, blues etc, Also its how you paint the eyes, yeah sometimes I think its pretty pretentious how some artists and critics speak about paintings etc

  • @ndgreenaway well yeah it is a bit, but they reduced the man to tears so I think they were on to something. They got more of him than he would have liked...

  • theyyyyy know ALL about him after 5 mins.....i find that slightly patronising
