Turns out all you need to keep a little 3V superbright white LED (such as you find in flashlights) lit for a long time (I'm going on 5 hours and still glowing strong) is a sheet of scrap aluminium foil (the anode, a piece of the one that wrapped your dinner plate once you wash off the food guck!) wrapped around a paper towel that has been soaked in 200 ml water with two capfuls of drain cleaner poured in wrapped around a stainless steel scouring pad (the cathode). Put it in a plastic baggy and connect to a joule thief and let there be light!
