If you want the scholarly breakdown of how this all works check out noam chomsky's manufacturing consent, and you'll see quantitatively and comprehensively how this works. The freest societies in the world have the most sophisticated media, (ie propaganda) because with freedom you can't use violence to control, you have to control people's thoughts.

The media has sunk much further than just becoming "puff entertainment".

It has become weaponized, and is a valuable tool of the military-industrial complex to confuse and misinform, to spread propaganda, and to manufacture consent for their crimes against humanity.

Google CNN+PSYOPS for a start.
