The Erie Canal was the main thoroughfare for goods being transported between Albany and Buffalo. The barges used for this purpose were pulled by horses or mules and crewed by hard men and women. It was a hard life, but there was a certain camaraderie among the bargees. According to Wikipedia:

The Erie Canal is a man-made waterway in New York that runs about 363 miles from Albany on the Hudson River to Buffalo at Lake Erie, completing a navigable water route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. First proposed in 1808, it was under construction from 1817 to 1832.

It was the first transportation system between the eastern seaboard (New York City) and the western interior (Great Lakes) of the United States that did not require Portage, was faster than carts pulled by draft animals, and cut transport costs by about 95%. The canal fostered a population surge in western New York state, opened regions further west to settlement, and helped New York City become the chief U.S. port. It was expanded between 1834 and 1862. In 1918, the original canal was replaced by the larger New York State Barge Canal.

  • its not years its miles so it will be like this 15 miles on the erie canal

  • @kevsmellmyfart1234 You will find that both years and miles are correct which is why I use both in the song.

  • Outstanding. Your voice reminds me a bit of Burl Ives. Thanks for the lyrics and chords, too. Excellent video.

  • @austinbarron Thanks for your comment. A number of people have made the same comparison. I liked Burl both as an entertainer and a movie star.

  • AHHHHHH!!!!! I LOVE THIS!!! You sang this so clean and straight... Gosh... We enjoyed watching this. Thank you for posting and please keep playing... DO you take requests???? :-)

  • @MissKfortruth Thank you for your kind comments. I do try to fulfil any requests I get, even when it is a song that is new to me, so please feel free to make one.
