@inphanta Lol! I'M twisting the facts? I think that's exactly what this video did. I've already said the subject is moot, BUT there were friends of Lincoln who testify that he was a Christian (like Phineas Gurley). We also have this quote attributed to Lincoln: "When I left Springfield...I was not a Christian....But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ. Yes, I do love Jesus."
@adabsurdum55: I wasn't aware of that, so I can't be said to be claiming any such thing. Anyway, it's funny how you completely diverted the topic when you realised your original assertion (i.e. that Lincoln was a bible believing Christian) was roundly debunked...
@inphanta And one more thing. The quote comes from an account by one Joseph Lewis in an address written in 1924, close to 60 years after Lincoln's death. According to Lewis, this was a public statement made by Lincoln, yet it first appears in Lewis' said address. It's funny that atheists would claim Lewis' testimony reliable, yet the Gospels unreliable, though they were written 20 to 60 years after the events they describe.
@adabsurdum55: Oh look, the goalposts moved! Deism and Christianity are two different things. Either way, the statement "the bible is not my book nor Christianity my religion" makes it quite clear that he wasn't a CHRISTIAN, which was the actual point. Whether he was a theist of any kind isn't really relevant since even if he was, he was not a theist that supported Christianity, therefore claiming he really did advocate Christianity is deliberately trying to twist the facts.
@inphanta I beg to differ. Both sides of the religion debate claim Lincoln. BUT most of Lincoln's writing (speeches and letters) suggest he was at the very least a deist. Remember, to say, "the Bible is not my book, nor Christianity my religion" is not to reject theism entirely, as you've erroneously suggested. Nonetheless, the debate continues.
@inphanta I asserted that Lincoln was a Bible believing Christian? I wasn't aware.

Lincoln totally owns that quote now. Might as well keep attributing "the game is afoot" to Shakespeare.
(I thought it was from Proverbs, though. Hm.)
