The University of California - Berkeley defeated defending national champion Brigham Young University, in sudden death overtime, to earn the 1998 USILA National Championship of Collegiate Club Lacrosse in St. Louis, Missouri. Cal Senior Attackman J.P. Harbour (4 goals) of San Francisco University H.S. received a feed from midfielder Kevin Moon on the crease and scored with 1:04 remaining in the overtime period. Moon had picked up a loose ball behind the BYU goal and fed Harbour on the crease who quicksticked the ball past BYU goalie Mike Nelson. The Golden Bears took an early 3 - 0 advantage and never trailed in the game. BYU tied the game with 1 second remaining in regulation as senior midfielder Cameron Pratt (2 goals) scored a goal to force overtime. Senior Attackman Alex Mast (3 goals, 2 assists) of The Cate School earned Offensive Tournament MVP honors for California. Senior BYU goalie Mike Nelson (24 saves) of Fairfield H.S. (Conn.) took Defensive Tournament MVP honors.
The 4th quarter saw Alex Mast score with 13:38 remaining in regulation to up the Bear lead to two goals. 30 seconds later, BYU answered with a Matt Davis goal, assisted by freshmen midfielder Chris Hardy (3 goals, 1 assist) from the Landon School. One minute later, BYU's Travis Clater scored to tie the game at the 12:03 mark of the 4th quarter. J.P. Harbour scored his 3rd goal of the game unassisted 45 seconds later to give Cal back the lead. Freshman midfielder John Principi (3 goals) scored unassisted a mere 16 seconds later to give the Golden Bears a 14 - 12 lead. And Alex Mast added his 4th goal of the game to give Cal a 15 - 12 advantage at the 8:24 mark of the 4th quarter. This proved to be Cal's final goal of regulation play. BYU went to work. Chris Hardy scored unassisted with 6:59 left to close the gap to 2 goals. 18 seconds later, another Landon School product Jared Archibald (1 goal, 1 assist) added a quick goal to bring the score to Cal 15, BYU 14. The frantic play continued for the remaining 6 minutes of regulation. BYU took several shots in the final few minutes but was denied in part by the fine work of Cal goalie, freshman Robbie Warner (from San Diego). Warner finished the championship game with 15 saves. A loose ball push call against Cal gave the ball back to BYU at midfield with 7 seconds remaining. BYU midfielder Cameron Pratt drove toward the Cal goal, dodging 2 defenders, and scored the final goal on a bounce shot that caught the upper corner with only 1 second remaining on the clock!

In overtime, Cal won the face-off and was able to get two shots off. BYU Goalie Mike Nelson made a nice save. And the ball was given back to BYU after a Cal turnover. BYU came down the field and took a few shots of their own. But the Cougars were denied by the Cal Defense. Cal Goalie Robbie Warner made a quick save of his own. Cal scooped up a ground ball and brought it down field. After another missed shot, Cal was able to call a timeout. This allowed the Cal Coach Joe Proud to set the final play which ultimately decided the championship. Senior Attackman J.P. Harbour got the ball on the crease from Kevin Moon and scored with 1:04 remaining in the overtime period. The entire Cal bench rushed the field to celebrate their 1998 National Championship.
