SMU | Meadows World Music Ensemble at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary
The MAC hosted an evening of music and dance with the Meadows World Music Ensemble and special guests: Ade Suparman, Poovalur Sriji and Alia Mohamed. Hot drumming and imaginative improvisation are a hallmark of the Meadows World Music Ensemble. Directed by Jamal Mohamed, the group performs on a variety of exotic percussion instruments from Africa, Asia and the Middle East as well as traditional Western instruments such as violins, keyboards and guitars. Concerts include traditional works from cultures around the world as well as original compositions. This performance included feature guest musicians, Ade Suparman and Poovalur Sriji and a performance of Balinese and Middle Eastern dance with Alia Mohamed, Olivia Smith and Amalia Nagel.
The Meadows World Music Ensemble, under the direction of Jamal Mohamed, explores music from cultures and continents around the globe. The group combines traditional instruments from Africa, Asia and Latin America with standard western orchestral instruments to create unique interpretations of traditional folk melodies as well as original compositions. Hot drumming and imaginative improvisation are hallmarks of the group's concerts, which have featured such guest artists as Glen Velez, Poovalur Sriji and K. Sridhar, among others.
