@Lyore thanks, I hadn't thought of the table leg. the couch won't work unfortunately. I'm good on the separation aspect, learning from "practice" nearly every doorway has a very sturdy metal gate. I ordered the tent stakes, even have one in the car now. Hoping as I finish my MBA studies this month I'll have dedicated training time, but I will also want to have the stakes around. Not sure I would ever encourage anyone to house 2 young male pits together, but we are making it work now

@DonnaOLearyTube Do you have really sturdy furniture? Try tying leashes to the legs of said furniture. A huge desk, a heavy couch, etc etc. Anything that can handle a few seconds of dog lunges. Also, doors! Once you get them off of each other, throw one into a room and shut the door.

@waldomarek The problem with that is...like people, that takes minutes. The dog is going to start panicking and thrashing even more, causing injury to you and the other dog in it's fight to stay alive. It's something that is a "last resort".

@leebee1989 If it's a matter of life and death for one of the dogs, use ANYTHING you can get your hands on. As mean as it sounds, a broken tooth or small mouth wound is better than a dead dog. Use a stick, a pole, anything that can fit into the dogs' mouth to get it off.

Hi there, I witnessed a dog sinking it's teeth into another dogs head today, and the owners were struggling to get it to let go. I felt a bit helpless, I didn't know what I could do to help. Do you have any tips for breaking up a dog fight without a break stick to hand?

one question guys, how do you (safely) choke out a dog? pretty much like how you'd do to a human from behind, with the arms around the neck?

@Standuntilyoudie one is kept inside and the other in the back yard. An uncle of mine (who JUST moved in with my family) got careless and left the sliding glass AND screen door open.

@TurtLePimpin Why do they have access to each other if they are 'sworn' enemies....really...you're asking for a dead dog.

I had to choke out my pit today because he wouldnt let go of my other dog. They are sworn enemies. wish i had one of these or a stun gun laying around.

many thanks. I have two male rescued pits, when I brought the second one home my elderly rottie decided he hated him after few days and bedlam ensued. I had a couple of break sticks that saved me recently, but I *really* like the idea of tent stakes or the wedge, way cheaper too. Having "been there" a couple times already this is really great advice. My only challenge now is if something happens in the house there is little to secure one of the dogs & it is hard to breakup alone otherwise.
Well, I don't know why a person would try to break any dog, other than a puppy off with their hand. That is why I call it a break stick, you need the stick to do it properly.

You really need a breaking stick or tent stake. I also would be careful about breaking other dogs off, that are not your own, in a fight. Hitting a dog during a fight, is a no-no: If it is a non-pit it will bite you, for sure, if it is a pit bull, it will not usually work, it may make them grip harder.Try back tying them and choking them off,,,,a stick is easier, however, if you can't find one, but sometimes choking them off may work.

To foreverguga,
I would be worried about breaking up a fight between a rottie and a b.c. too. you would probably get bitten. breaking sticks are for fights when two apbts or bully breeds get into it. Other breeds tend to snap at whoever tries to separate them, where the average apbt only focuses on the other dog.
