This is the same ship that my wife and i went on our honeymoon. We also lost the main engines and had to "limp" into Nice's Bay. Then we got moved by lifeboat to shore (which took 12 hours to transport 2500 people 1/4 mile) Oh, and did i mention this is 2 months after our incident... way to go Island Cruises.

Where was Francesco Schettino when we needed him? ;-)

The skipper should have dropped the anchors way before he got too close...

Imagine if the engines blow at high seas...

I live near here; luckily the bay at Villefranche Sur Mer is extremely deep!

Maybe if modern day cruise lines didn't try to make every dollar possible by unloading, reloading and leaving port in the same day with virtually zero maintenance these things wouldn't happen.

That's why the anchor should be clear for drop when approaching such a harbor. Same applies for every little sailing yacht. But the captain is a professional. He waited explicitly for more shallow waters. Probably it was too deep for the anchor further out.

They once called the cruise trade "carting cattle" .But if you ever seen the cattlle leave Darwin on board those "floating hotels" you could only dream.
