Twitter to censor tweets on a country-by-country basis

Twitter has unveiled plans to censor tweets on a country-by-country basis, drawing criticism from free-speech advocates a year after it was praised by Internet Freedom advocates for allowing Egyptian dissidents to continue tweeting after the Internet was blocked during the Arab Spring.

Twitter says its country-specific censorship is meant to replace its previous system, when tweets that were taken down disappeared completely. Twitter will now censor some tweets in certain countries, but posts will remain visible elsewhere in the world. Twitter says it will be transparent about when and why tweets are censored. Twitter will post information on censored tweets at chillingeffects.org

Many Twitter users, however, are outraged and believe the company is selling out Internet freedom, possibly with an eye for entering the China market, where it is blocked, though it is used by Chinese dissidents to get information to the outside world.
"If Twitter censors then I'll stop tweeting," Chinese activist artist Ai Weiwei tweeted after hearing the news.

I just LOVE how the world accepts China's censorship politics instead of encouraging information freedom even in America anti-communist want Chinese censoring politics. What a brave new world. Here in America we know nothing about China's Muslim population being moved off there homeland or farmers riots but we know everybody is happy with there market gap between the very poor and the super rich.

@joseenelsur You never learned about the enlightenment movement in school?! "cogito ergo sum" and "sapere aude!" says nothing to you? Ever heard of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Descartes, Voltaire, Kant…? Hell, even Thomas Paine, one of the US founding fathers could be considered a follower of the ideas of the age of enlightenment… Wow, it's really sad to see someone not knowing that, I hope that you might be still in middle school and that you will learn about this later.

@595o I don't know what is that Enlightmente movement. I suposse sth similar to the New Age movement. The latter in certain way fights absolutism or the catholic church but is so imperfect that is doomed to fail but not before the end of religions I guess.

@roboticterror I suppose "too much materialism" is when despite the existence of certain (or many) scientific proofs still some people keep denying the existence of ... for example: alien life (very near to us like Mars, moons of Jupiter, etc), lost civilizations (like Atlantis), life after death, parallel realities, alternative free energy sources, etc.

@joseenelsur How can you have too much too much materialism? There's no proof of the phenomena. And if those other realities can't be demonstrated with the techniques we have, then how you claim they even exist? Also, those atrocities might of seem logical to those who cause them, but they were not. Those atrocities were fuel by bigotry and fear, not logic or/and reason.

@joseenelsur You act like materialism is evil or something. For what we can tell, this material world is the only one that exist. The flat earth theory was from a literally interpreting the bible; The ancient Greeks discover the earth was round beforehand using logic and reason. Slavery and sexism came from bigotry, not logic or reason. You should learn a bit more about logic and how truth determine, and history.

@roboticterror Nowadays too much "logic" and "reason" is what keeps mankind stuck in 100% Materialism. With "logic and reason" is that catholic church said centuries before that Earth was flat, kingdoms aloud slavery, women were treated a bit better than animals.
