Capitals vs. Flyers -- October 27, 2009 -- After a scoreless first period, the Caps got into some penalty trouble in the second with the Flyers scoring twice on the power play. Alex Ovechkin opened up the Caps' scoring with a great snap shot. Then Nicklas Backstrom scored (wrist shot) on the power play late in the second period to tie the game. Alexander Semin put in a snap shot in the third and Ovechkin topped off the night with a backhand empty netter to give the Caps their fifth straight victory. Caps goalie Jose Theodore stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced, including all 20 he saw in the third period. Included among those third-period shots was a penalty shot stop on Phillys Darroll Powe, coming just 83 seconds after the Caps had taken the lead for the first time. With a Swedish television station in attendance and chronicling his efforts, Backstrom enjoyed a four-point night. He earned the game's No. 2 star designation as well as the hardhat from his teammates.
