I believe I've read that eagles eat mostly *carion*...dead fish/animals....this was a surprise to me before I started watching the Decorah Eagles... I thought they mostly caught live fish/rodents/rabbits....no, they mostly survive on already-dead prey.

@icthruu4evr eagles have a poor sense of smell. They eat on things for days sometimes in their nests and leave the leftovers to rot. I've seen a squirrel pelt in a nest and the mom pulling it over an eaglet that wasn't able to hide under her while it was cold and windy. I was eagle nest cams.

@xbeast133 Eagles eat dead things all the time. They get hit by cars eating roadkill. The die of lead poisoning due to people using lead bullets to kill a prey animal and then leaving it there. Lead is a nerve toxin. Vultures eat mostly dead things but will hunt for live prey if they are hungry and cannot find something dead. Vultures take the injured and or sick first.

Eagles fish that way every, every, every day. It doesn't need to be dead although if there is a dead one they will take those too. Yes, eagles do eat dead things sometimes.

@xbeast133 Oh so the fish might be injured, but eagles often feed on dead animals. They are just like vultures and will get food wherever they can including dead animals. I myself have thrown dead fish into the water just to see the eagle come down and grab it.

@dudechuck82 No they injured it a bit. Eagles VERY rarely feed on dead things, as vultures do. They probably stabbed it once or twice to make it look injured. Eagles have the same mentality as Lions, take the weakest and youngest first. It would have to be struggling, but yeah it did go belly up.
