  • @crankylifter And she speaks chinese!

  • @xyrules666

That is correct - the Eight Banners, the premier Qing Manchu crack military organization, was a mix of Manchus, Mongols, and Han. It was only w/ the overthrow of Qing by ROC that all of them came to be classified as Manchus.

  • @xyrules666

That's right. We are all Chinese - during the Qing Dynasty and to this day, Chinese transcends the Han identity. China is a multicultural state, unlike Korea or Japan. The Manchus even called their empire "Dulimbai Gurun" - Central Kingdom aka Middle Kingdom aka Zhong Guo aka China. This has been followed ever since by the ROC and PRC. To cause fissures among the various ethnic groups is to do harm to China.

  • Manchus wanted so much to be part of China and its great civilization. The Mongols warned them about letting in too much Han culture. Alas, now they have their wish fulfilled - they are now fully fledged citizens of the People's Republic of China. It is unfortunate though that their language is headed the way of the dodos, though like the stuffed dodos in museums, there are tons of Manchu writing stored in Beijing and elsewhere.

  • I also laugh at educkling who thinks clothing is somehow central to cultural identity. I can't speak for every culture, but look at Chinese - today, all Chinese wear western clothing. Manchu clothes and hanfu are only reserved for special occasions. Is Chinese culture on the decline? No. And thanks to Chinese ancestors' habit of recording everything down, we can perform research to see what Chinese culture before Manchus came was like.

  • I laugh at people like educkling who thinks the Manchu could have imposed their language on the Chinese. First of all, the Chinese could revolt in mass and destroy the Manchu by sheer number. Second, back then, before the advent of Western culture, all high culture and knowledge (governance, philosophy, medicine, etc.) was written in CHINESE. Manchus studied Chinese to access knowledge. Exterminating the Chinese language was the last thing on their minds.

  • Love Anthony Bourdain! And people should really stop with all the hating. Every culture has it's eccentric dishes and delicacies, in all seven continents and one is not better than the other as Anthony Bourdain demonstrates. I really don't understand all the derogatory insults and foul languages getting posted here. Just enjoy the video.
