From a 1993 movie that focuses on 3 victims from the I-880 Cypress St Viaduct freeway collapse in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake in the bay area.

This earthquake clip was actually filmed in San Francisco on the then under-demolition CA-480 Embarcadero Freeway, which looked similar to the destroyed I-880 in Oakland.

  • Does anyone know if the freeway section at 0:56 is the Central Freeway or the Embarcadero Freeway?

  • @Enigmatism415 it is the Embarcadero. the Central/101's only sharp curve was when it went from a single deck into a double deck just south of Market Street...it then continued almost straight until Hayes where it bended slightly to the northeast until it ended at Turk/Golden Gate

  • Look at the I-280 Freeway From the 101 interchange to Embarcadero CalTrans needs to demolish the double decker section of I-280 because it is a hazard in the next big quake.

  • if you remember, after the earthquake the double-deck portion of the 280 remained closed for several years (until 1994-5?) while it was extensively repaired and retrofitted.

  • I was there in 1989. Trust me friend, it lasted a lot longer than 17 seconds. There were several waves. It was incredibly terrifying for a 6.9 earthquake. I saw people trample one another just to exit a building. Don't always listen to the official 'stats'. There is nothing quite like seeing something with your own eyes.

  • Wow this quake lasted for 2 min while the real Loma Prieta lasted for 17 seconds. If the quake lasted for 2 min then all of Northern California would have been demolished. and there would have been thousands of deaths in the Bay Area. This 2 min Quake would have damaged Sacramento also if it were to happen. also it would have to larger than the 1906 quake. I lived in South San Francisco in 1989 and I was 3 years old

  • @jujumediazone

I have since researched it; it is indeed the Embarcadero Freeway (the section where it branches off of the I-80 Bay Bridge approach, next to the clock tower and 76 / Bank of America building). That building with the blue stripe still exists.

  • @Enigmatism415 It certainly looked like the Embarcadero entrance. I've often wondered the same thing.

  • this is the embarcadero freeway..

  • @dinfg6 The World Series game that day is only reason there weren't thousands of deaths from that particular earthquake. On any normal day that freeway would have been packed with thousands of commuters. Thousands who would have been crushed in that freeway collapse.

  • ...

  • that was in west oakland cypress dubble decker and it was long then 17 seconds i know i lived there and seen it the next day

  • what?

  • Do you have the entire movie?

  • That car must have been carrying a bomb that coincidentally blew up just as it hit the ground.

  • 2:27 "help, I'm being attacked by an empty box!"
