I think your roots (in the glass) have to be in the dark,roots dont like the light.Just to help

actually roots don't mind light, what they cant stand is algae taking over and becoming direct competitions to them particularly at the root zone, which is why I use an algaecide to help them keep an edge. another note, the main root balls are not out at the edge where light can penetrate anyways, the main root ball is in the center zone of the coconut fiber filled top planter. those dill weeds are now over 2 feet tall and still going.

What kind of growing medium do you use?

rockwool cubes in hydroton filled pots for drip feed, feed 4 times daily for 15 minutes per feeding.

Got a question for you. HPS or Metal halide? and i aint talking veggies neither.
