Giant Slugs Mating ヤマナメクジの交尾

A pair of the giant mountain slug (Incilaria fruhstorferi, family Philomycidae) mating on the fallen log. Mid-July 2008 in Japan.

雨上がりの林道で交尾しようとしているヤマナメクジのペアを発見。ご存知のようにナメクジは雌雄同体で生殖器は頭の横にあります。余りに動きが遅いので痺れを切らして一時­離れたら、残念ながら最も興味深い途中経過を見逃してしまったようです。次に機会があれば三脚を据えて長回しの微速度撮影に挑戦してみたいものです。白い精子嚢を草の茎で­突付いてみたら表面に粘り気がありました。意外にしっかりした触感。カタツムリほど敏感ではないようで、突付いても逃げたり反応しませんでした。

i think it was a respiratory opening (called pneumostome).

u can see the open-close movements (breathing!) in a sluggish way.

the mouth is on the underside of the head, btw.

Poorly filmed.  The mating of slugs is probably nature's most beautiful and revealing events. What a waste to have recorded it so badly!
