We had worked closely with the organisers for that comp and this had to live up to all the hype we created. We had 7 cameras on the floor for the finals, including one fixed camera at the lip of the roof. Fragilo suggestions for the video was that we mix up the orders of the problems to alternate the colors of the walls. It might have been more aesthetic but people got confused and though that this was shot on 2 days. Don't be fooled, these are all final problems, there aren't any qualifiers in this vid.

So here we were, after months of preparation, it was D-Day. We had big hope for that day and everyone crossed their fingers that everything would run smoothly. The last man to qualify, Seth Masson came out of isolation, all dressed up with Quebec's flag. The crowd went nuts and Seth crushed the first problems. But as Seth was sending everything and the crowd got more rowdy, the route setters started worrying big time. Are the problems too easy? They quickly tweaked a few things on the last problem while Seth was onsighting the 4th problem. On the 5th and last problem, Seth was finally stopped but was able to make it to the zone.

If the last person to qualify finished 4 out of 5 problems, what are the other, stronger guys gonna do? Does everyone gonna flash everything? Route setters laid in agony for a while until they realized that the problems were actually perfect and remaining competitors were having a hard time. Seth really had just been on fire. Seth denied it, but the Quebec colors and the crowd support must have gave him some extra energy.

Still, Sean McColl hadn't climbed yet and as Canada's strongest competitor he was the favorite to win the comp. However, to everyone surprise, Sean had a hard time on 2 problems with slopers and weird body position. It seemed that Sean would not be able to go home with his first TDB title. But every comp needs a climax and when the first guy to climb sends everything, the climax is long gone by the time the last guy is climbing. Sean saved the day by getting the high point on the last problem and everyone went home with a smile on their face.

  • Awesome video, by the way. One of the best if not the best bouldering competition video i've seen.

A friend of mine had a cd with that first track but i don't know the name of the track. What is it?

  • I can't find that track again, sorry. I only remember the second one. A Felix da Housecat remix of Sinnerman, by Nina Simone.

  • I have a question.

Both Matt Bosley and Seth Mason onsighted 3 problems and sent one problem at their 4th try. But on the last problem, Matt Bosley did better than Seth Mason. Why did Seth win?

  • The TDB uses the same rules as the world cups. Basically, the person who send the most poblems win. Then if there is a tie (like Matt and Seth here), the person with the least attempts to the top win. If there is still a tie, the person who had the most zones win (zones are the hold in a box halfway through the problem).

You can see Seth on the last problem, he grabs the zone and get all psyched, knowing he has close to a perfect score. Even if Matt went higher, he needed to send to win.

  • The Canadian Bouldering Championships are back in Montreal. This time, the event will be STREAMED LIVE on internet for two days. Check it out on May 16 and 17.
