This video shows the rapid effect of a small fire starting on a Christmas tree. Safety advice is included in the video, and listed below.

Celebrations are an excuse to have fun, not an excuse for a fire

Christmas lights don't get used regularly so give them a bit of extra thought

Check the maximum amperage that can be handled by the fuse in the plug.

If bulbs blow, replace them

Turn Christmas lights off at night, and when you go out

Check your Christmas lights confirm to British Standards

Never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings

Decorations burn easily, don't attach them to lights or heaters

Check the battery in your smoke alarm

Never overload electrical sockets

Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before going to bed

If there is a fire, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL 999
