A clip from the fourth Star Trek movie. This is the sequence where Chekov asks for directions to "Nuclear Wessels". It was filmed with real passers-by.

if someone with that accent was asking me where the nuclear wessels were (especially in this time period), I would be calling the FBI and the CIA, immediately.

I don't see why it should be Polish thing. It's true that the Poles usually write "v" as "w" but they still pronounce it like "v". What they pronounce like "w" is written "ł" or "Ł".

Policeman's mind:
(Is this Russian a spy? No, a spy should be smarter than to ask for the location of nuclear vessels in public. He must be just a crazy fool... But what if he's actually a spy and pretending to be fool by asking it?? Well, what should I do, arrest him or not?)

Yep, it's been noted many a time that mispronouncing "v" as "w" would be more likely to be a Polish thing, not a Russian thing. (Walter Koenig himself is of Russian descent, though.)
