http://www.love-madeira.com/index.html presents: The British Cemetery in Funchal
The British Cemetery dates its origin from 1770. Prior to this date, Madeiran Law dictated that the mortal remains of those deceased who were not Roman Catholic by faith were to be buried at sea.
However, from 1772 onward, British interests in Madeira secured a burial ground in the outskirts of Funchal. This cemetery remains today, although the boundaries have been slightly move and added to.
Over two hundred years, some note-worthy people, of various nationalities, have been buried here.
Our video provides directions to walk to the cemetery from the centre of Funchal. We then have footage of the surrounds, reflecting the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds.
