A giant Philips light switch lights up the 11,875 pound L.E.D. crystal Times Square New Year's Eve Ball and sends it up a 141-foot flagpole atop One Times Square.
Event co-organizers Tim Tompkins, President of the Times Square Alliance, Ed Crawford, CEO of Philips Lighting North America, and Susan Bloom, Director of Corporate Communications Philips Lighting flip the giant switch that initiates the spectacular, state-of-the-art, lighting effects, powered by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs and covered in 2,688 Waterford Crystals.
And lower down in the building, thousands of Nivea balloons are inflated and put into storage, ready to be handed out to revelers in Times Square as the party reaches its final hours on December 31st.
