On November 13, 1999, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was relit after being moved over a quarter-mile from its original location. Erosion of the barrier island where it was located had put the light within a couple of hundred feet from the shore, from the original 1500 feet away when it was built.
The light was moved over several months, averaging feet per hour on a specially-built railway. During the move, if you stared at the structure for a few minutes you could actually tell it was really moving. It was just about like watching the hour hand on a clock.
This video was taken at the relighting ceremony on November 13, 1999. We didn't know exactly when the relighting would occur, only that it would be around 6:10 or so. We put the camera on the light and it turned on within a minute -- a few seconds later and we'd have missed it entirely. It was a nice day to honor the old beacon.
Happy Anniversary Cape Hatteras!
