We spend several days with the marines tasked with restoring order in Afghanistan in time for the elections.
Their most difficult task is gaining the trust of locals. As they search the houses, the villagers become confused. Women hide in the fields in fear. The harsh terrain and militia activities make helping these Afghans extremely difficult.
@dronus When Bush says they needed to invade Iraq and Afghanistan cuz of Saddam's WMD and Al Qaeda, that's really just propaganda. Saddam was no threat to the US except that he wanted to drive up the price of oil and sell directly to Russia and China. Al Qaeda or any terrorist org cannot bring down the US, they are too small and weak. The real reason why your brother and other US are there is control of oil and other strategic minerals - the 90% of Americans are really serving the richest 10%.

@dronus By now it's a well known secret. Google Operation Ajax - CIA supported coup to topple the democratically-elected Iranian PM in 1953 so that they could install the Shah of Iran and stop the USSR from getting their oil. USSR supported Iraq. That's why Iran has F-14's and Iraq has Soviet weapons. But after 1979, US supported Saddam in his war with Iran. Today US has surrounded Iran with bases in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a long history of cat and mouse

@AccordGTR and he told me this around 04 or 05 and the book you speak of was released in 04'. However I know that he never read this book cause I lived with him up until he left for Iraq. He showed me on the map how it's a good place to have a base cause we don't have one in that region. I was reading the news a couple weeks ago and stumbled upon the UAV airfields being built in silence in countries already. I think it was talking about yemen or someshit. Crazy

@AccordGTR OMFG... NO WAY DUDE... I swear to god my brother before being deployed to iraq even fucking told me about this same exact shit. He went to this thing to get his orders or whatever and when he came back he said the same exact shit. He told me not to tell anybody and I haven't. he told me how they're going to invade iraq and other stuff. But the key thing I remember him telling me was that the us wanted to establish bases in that region cause the location is in the middle of iran etc..

@dronus Nope. Book is about US and UK covert ops and the history of conflict in a particular region. US was never concerned about the people of Afghanistan or the Middle East. They are only interested in putting bases there so they can control the flow of resources and spy on their enemies. The humanitarian aspect is just a cover. Very little is spent on helping the people. Most of the money is towards bribing officials and arming them. Yup 90% suffer but 10% benefit

@AccordGTR Does the book talk about brain washing some suicide bombers? I'm not benefiting from what America is doing and at the considerable cost goes to the people. Cause outsiders hate Americans and don't understand that we sometimes go through worse shit than foreigners. Granted we may have way more opportunities than other countries but that doesn't mean I don't go through hardship. This country needs a washington dc 360*I'll check out the book and in vietnam there were also suicide bombers

@dronus It's an excellent book. Opened my eyes really after 9/11 happened. Made me understand how there could be people like that who are mad enough to blow themselves up and a few thousand others halfway around the world. The US has made some really good friends and really bad enemies over the past century from its intervention in other countries. Americans are benefiting from being the world's remaining empire but with some considerable cost.

@AccordGTR ill read the book instead. thanks. i know about the aghanistan and mujahidin n the us supplying weapons to them. just didnt know exactly with what your talking about.

@dronus there are many sources...book I read FIGHTING DIRTY by Peter Harclerode former British SAS turned military historian about covert wars from the Balkans to Afghanistan, from Ho Chi Minh to Osama. After US lost its bases in Iran 1979 they wanted to go into Afghanistan which was an ally of the USSR so Brzezinski and the CIA hatched a plan with the Pakistan ISI to supply arms to Mujahidin foreign fighters to destabilize Afghanistan. Look for Youtube video also
