It is a battery powered power function train using 9v train motors. The engine has a total of three motors - two in the tender and one in the engine. The battery and IR receiver are in the tender.

3 motors provide more pulling power. One motor would drive the engine just fine, the additional motors help provide more traction and the ability to pull more cars.

The daylight locomotive has gone through about four significant iterations over about 10 years. The most recent build took about 40 hours.
