Kai Degner, founder of the OrangeBand Initiative, presents "Reconsidering Debate: NCDD & D" at the 2008 National Conference on Dialogue & Deliberation held in Austin, TX.
He argues that an organization dedicated to promoting, educating and facilitating processes of dialogue and deliberation should also be dedicated to promoting and facilitating public understanding and involvement with the processes of debate. The case is based on the proposition that debate is no different than other processes of dialogue and deliberation: it can be used to disguise power, or to reveal power, to silence or to empower, to misinform or to inform.
So very well said. Thank you for rehabilitating the way we see debate in the D&D field. We have too often labelled debate as the problematic middle child of the D&D world. But as you say, this is a method we need in our tool box, bolstered by a deeper understanding the the principles that underly healthy and fruitful debate!
