Cotton is bad for a number of reasons. First it has terrible insulation value. (It just doesn't hold in the warmth well) The other big problem with cotton is that it is a big sponge to moisture. Any sweat you create is absorbed, further reducing cotton's ability to keep you warm. When I am going out for a long time and don't want to risk being cold I do not wear a single article of clothing made out of cotton.
