I had to point out that your arguments are not only unconvincing, but actually work against you.

@FearsEdge 1. The NHS isn't perfect. The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ("NICE" or National Institute for "Curbing Expenditure") has a lot to answer for. That said, there are certainly better socialised systems around - the one in France is thought to be the best system in the world.

The state puts the economy in a chokehold and has the potential to oppress civil liberties. I'm an anarcho-socialist / libertarian socialist. The main part of the socialist aspect residing is the cooperative/common management of the means of production but regulation, taxation, prohibition and etc. would all be abolished.

I'm Canadian and I'm very much glad that our healthcare is not owned by the private sector. Our taxes don't really show much of a prominent difference from that of the USA, too (though our population is less). If healthcare became a matter of the private sector, I would immediately leave. There are have been various close-calls with family members and friends where they most likely would not have been able to afford expenses if it was a matter of business.

It's a shame that Tea Party folks who don't want Social Medicine are poisoning the well of debate on this matter. Essentially dissenters are lumped in with the Tea Party if they hold similiar views with different reasons, so it's very easy for those who support UHC to just ignore your arguements.

I am not yet convinced that a state can be defined as you say.

The thing about universal free healthcare in the UK is that most people don't mind paying their National Insurance. The reason is simple: We have no idea what our health will be like in a few years' time. Under a private system, you can "choose" not to pay your insurance. You can "choose" not to accept medical treatment. Choosing not to get sick is a different matter. And by the way, US healthcare is the most expensive in the world, and no, it's not the best.

When the government is spending more than half the total dollars spent on health care, the price is bid up and up and up, especially when the other half is payed by third-party insurance companies for the most part, which is a result of tax incentives. What we are missing is the rationing and price controls of the systems that you seem to think are better. Remember, in a "universal" health care system, you don't have access to health care, you have access to a waiting list.

@FearsEdge 2. Yes, you have to wait, but at least you get treated. Last year I had a minor operation I could not have afforded under the American system. I've known several people with long-term life-threatening illnesses who have been successfully treated. The NHS will not stop treatment as long as you are benefitting from it. And If you really can't wait, you don't have to use the NHS. You can always go private - if you can afford it.

Why would you bring up the american health care system when I just explained to you what it consists of? Does that sound like the free market to you? Where did you see me advocating the american system?
