After Colonel Nelson A. Miles received the Nez Perce surrender at Bear Paw Mountain, he was ordered to take them to Fort Abraham Lincoln. It was a cold run in the coming winter of 1877-1879, but they arrived in November of 1877. The citizens of Bismarck, Dakota Territory treated them with the most kindness and actually wanted them to stay at Fort Abraham Lincoln.
The Nez Perce were transferred to St. Paul, Minnesota, then taken south to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Eventually the Nez Perce were allowed to move back to the Northwest, but only to share a reservation with another tribe on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington. They eventually were given a reservation in Idaho.
Chief Joseph used every media opportunity to make the country aware of his people's plight. He was not a war chief.

Thank you for posting. Chief Joseph sure was a handsome man. The video is educational. Helps me to remember who I am. I'm half and forget sometimes.
