Before and After shots using a Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon 100mm f2.8 lens and various 2x Anamorphic Lens attachments.
Kowa 2x Anamorphic Lens
Isco 2x Anamorphic Lens

Nothing special or scientific here. We were recently asked by a few people "Whats the difference in shooting anamorphic or not". In some shots the difference is obvious, in other shots...not so much.

Obviously the flares are a big difference, but it also has an overall look and feel that is a bit softer (which is a plus when dealing with these super sharp DSLRs like the 5D Mark II). The other big characteristic, that we've seen our entire lives in hollywood movies that use Anamorphics, is the oblong or oval bokeh.

More before and after shots on the way! Let us know if you'd like to see anything specific...

  • Why a bigger aperture on anamorphic? You were a full stop up.

  • @HedgehogStudios1 We were trying to get a shallower depth of field on the anamorphic shots to accentuate the oval oblong stretch bokeh. At f4 it wasnt as prominent. Since the image is wider with an anamorphic lens, the depth of field also appears wider. Also, the anamorphic lenses loses about half a stop of light.

  • i love the type of blur anamorphic lenses give sort of a directional blur (vertical blur) if you know what i mean?

  • @KyleMovieStudios Yes definitely. Thats one big reason we were always drawn to the look after seeing that vertical smearing of the bokeh in movies like Star Wars, Heat and Boogie Nights. The CineMorph filter that we make also creates the vertical blur without actually stretching or squeezing the image. Its anamorphic "looks" filter. Nothing's as good as a real deal lens though.

  • i have no knowledge of this....but from what i saw in the video...the anamorphic lense gives the footage more of a "movie" look. right? the colors seemed to be better captured with the anamorphic lense. is that what its for?

  • @JohnnyGraves15 Yes, it does seem to give it a more cinematic look, but the main differences are in the areas out of focus (bokeh) in the background and foreground. Easier to spot with the light shots.

Also, the anamorphic clips have real letterbox, whereas the regular lenses, we had to add the black letterboxes in post.

  • I don't think anamorphic lenses are really worth the money and time, personally. :\ Most of the shots *looked* better without the anamorphic lens.

  • @VidAtlantic cool :) and the anamorphic lens flares are cool but there so over used now in music videos and games (they only look good in certain things)

  • that's so cool :) !!
