Just gonna say this article is crap. Dragon Quest, Lunar, Eariler final fantasy games even. You know what they all have in common? They're all JRPG's and they are ALL set in pretty open world's. It's A ROLE PLAYING GAME! Of course having an open world to explore the universe you've set your player in is gonna be what the gamers want!!!

I don't get how anyone can say, with an open world, it’s hard to tell a story. The older Final Fantasy games did it; why can't the newer ones? In fact. Final Fantasy 6,7,8,9 were SquareEnix best games ever. If only the graphics for those games were updated from 2D to 3D, and in HD… success! Of course, we want newer stories, and an evolution of the series. Here’s the truth. The newer SqareEnix teams, want to be movie producers above all else. It takes a craftsmen to create game play.

I think Final Fantasy 13 proved one thing though... the graphics are top of the line. The art style, music and presentation is amazing. But without strong game play, regardless of what our (paid) and (sponsored) critics hype... regardless of high scores or PR, the game will end up as a failed project, that can create damage before the next project is even released. Now everyone will be a critic; living in an age of rapid information sharing. SquareEnix might correct this come 13-2 or VS. I hope.

A game does not need to be open world, but it sucks when it feels like an on rails RPG. Open Worlds, or open areas are fun though. Basicly a 3d overrworld map. Even if it's to only find that one rare monster, or that one secret puzzle. The older Final Fantasys' had just that. The newer ones, rarely do. Some people could spend hours on the mini games that fit within the story, or back track to level up, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. Side stories an unlockable characters...

i liked XIII. It was my first time playing any final fantasy as a matter of fact, and this game got me hooked on the whole series. so I think it was mostly made the way it was to introduce the next generation gamers (such as me a 18 yr old) to the Final Fantasy world.

Didn't have an open world? FFXIII didn't even have an open CORRIDOR! That game was one big straight line for 20 hours. I'm sorry, but that IS bad game design; western or not.
