Season 1, episode 4

By the time they finally pulled into the driveway of their new home, it was already six in the morning. Patrick turned off the ignition, leaning back in the chair and closing his eyes. It'd been a long drive, 20 hours nonstop save bathroom and food breaks. Taylor had been worried that he'd be too tired, and he was, but they'd made it there safely. Right now she was curled up in the passenger seat sleeping soundly, looking just like she had when she was about ten years younger.

Letting out a long sigh, Patrick rubbed his sore eyes before quietly opening the car door and stepping outside. It was a clear night -- the stars were out and there was hardly a cloud in the sky. It was beautiful really; you hardly ever saw stars like this down in LA. That was a plus, he thought.

He let himself dwindle outdoors, taking in breaths of fresh air before turning around to face the massive house behind him that he now owned. It was well-built, furnished nicely, just the kind of house he'd always wanted to live in. Of course, there would be more than enough lawn to mow especially in the summer, but that was really a small price to pay. Besides, Patrick loved the outdoors. If Taylor weren't so busy with school they'd go camping more often, but that was another story.

Walking the few feet back to the car, he poked his head through the door and gently shook Taylor awake. "Honey, we're here." He carefully avoided using the word "home", as to not upset his daughter even more.

Taylor opened her eyes slowly to meet her dad's smiling ones. "Come inside? I'll make a make-shift bed for you to sleep on, and later we'll get you a real bed," he promised.

"Okay," she sighed, stretching out her long legs and stepping onto the pavement. Getting as many of her things she could carry, Taylor walked up the front steps and to the door where her dad was fumbling around in his pockets for the key.

"I know it's here somewhere," Patrick muttered. Usually a very organized person, being a doctor, he figured the careful placement of the new house keys had been forgotten in the rush of moving. Taylor stood silently by him, her arms wrapped around her things and her duffels weighing her down.

Patrick chuckled softly to himself. "We both know this never happens to me."

Taylor managed to smile even though she was exhausted. "Dad, check your jeans pocket."

Her father did so, his hand emerging with a set of keys. "That's weird, you would've thought that I'd check that place first," he said incredulously, unlocking the door.

Taylor just shook her head and laughed at her father's expense. Once inside, she dumped everything on the ground and made multiple trips back and forth until everything was safely in the house. Not caring enough to look around at her new surroundings, she settled onto the living room floor with a pillow and fell back to sleep.

"Tay-" Patrick walked into the room mid-sentence, stopping when he saw his daughter fast asleep. She looked so peaceful, like there was never anything wrong in the world, that it made him smile. Walking over to her, he tucked a blanket over her shoulders and planted a kiss on her head.

"I love you baby girl. Sleep tight; don't let the bed bugs bite. And have happy dreams," he whispered just like he had every night when she was a little girl. Getting up, he headed up the stairs and down the hall to the room that would be his. Settling down on the carpet with a pillow under his head, Patrick finally was able to shut his eyes and go to sleep.

As Joe scarfed down his breakfast like a man who hadn't eaten in years, Nick just sat at the table with the fork halfway to his mouth, frozen as he watched his brother eat. When Joe finished his third helping of chocolate chip pancakes and was debating on whether to go for fourths, Nick spoke up. "I'm mildly fascinated," he mentioned, finally bringing the forkful of pancakes to his mouth.

Joe rolled his eyes, grinning. "You're just jealous you can't eat as much as me," was his joking reply. "Which means you'll never grow as tall as me, and that you'll never be able to beat me at arm wrestling. But no big deal," he added with a shrug as he helped himself to more pancakes, "It's just the perks of you being the younger brother."

In reply, Nick came up next to Joe and grabbed his plate. "Guess I've got a lot of catching up to do," he said, purposefully keeping his face straight as he started on Joe's pancakes.

Joe smirked, messing up Nick's hair as he walked by. "Fine, take my pancakes. But they'll make you fat."

It was now Nick's turn to roll his eyes before he grinned. "Sure they will; and they'll make you into a giant formless sack, Mr. Third-Helpings," he ducked as Joe playfully swatted at his head. "Hey, don't you have somewhere to be? You know, Saturday, {the} Joe Jonas, parties?"

Joe nodded on his way out of the kitchen. "Of course, but that'll come tonight," he said with a laugh.
