From WABC-TV in New York, here's a public affairs telop, followed by a station ID slide with voiceover, and the opening to their "Saturday Afternoon Movie", recorded on Jan. 4, 1986. It's probably a safe assumption that WABC-TV shared this move open with the other ABC-owned channel sevens (this was before Capital Cities took over ABC completely).

Squeezed in-between is one of my favorite commercials from that time, the Colgate "WMFP" spot.

  • BTW, it's "The Sunshine Boys", tonight at 11:45.

  • Great clip, thanks for sending this along! Yup, damn near a clone of the intro from WEWS-TV5 here in Cleve-town!

  • No problem, glad to be of service...you're The Man, Ray!!

  • Is the announcer live or pre-recorded?

  • Live booth announcers were still in full effect back in '86.

  • it probably came on after american bandstand on that day at 1:30 est

  • This was right before 4:00 PM. ABC had no sports coverage that afternoon, and the movie shown was the pilot to the "Batman" series. Ironically, this film was shown nearly 20 years to the day of the series' premiere on ABC).

  • By ant chance, would anyone have a "Saturday Afternoon Movie" or "Sunday Afternoon Movie" open/close from 1977-78-79 or so that actually used the "spinning cameraman? I recall a Sunday Afternoon Movie broadcast about that time that featured "Gay Purr-ee," and used said animated cinematographer icon. Thanks.

  • WPVI in Philadelphia, also used this movie open.

  • I live in Nassau County!

  • I remember WLS-TV Ch.7 in Chicago used this intro back in the early 1980s til early 1987. Thanks for uploading!

  • I don't there is a Saturday afternoon movies on abc. I watch abc on cable back in 1992. When we have cable in our house in the Philippines

  • Google just helped me out... it was "Megaforce." All this time, I thought it was Chuck Norris in the film. It was Barry Bostwick.

  • I first came across said Movie stuff after one such Sat Afternoon flick(Saturday after Thanksgiving 88) ended with someone saying this line, "The good guys always win... even in teh 80s."

  • Nearly three years later, the Saturday Afternoon Movie would use the "Moving Pictures" theme music with a different intro and outro.

  • To update, I do have a video of the movie graphic. I will try to upload the video when I get the chance.
