Also wet suits help protect the skin from the affects of the fast water and hard surface. Try doing it in cold weather without and see if you agree.

why are they even wearing wetsuits? thats kinda pointless. i get why they need the rashguards, for their number right? could someone please explain?

Because it was cold. The contest was during winter. The water sits in a giant swimming pool underneath the wave surface so it's basically solar heated. Cold weather = cold water = wetsuits.
