Sting wrote the song, inspired by the prostitutes he saw near the band's seedy hotel while they were in Paris, France during October 1977. The title of the song comes from the name of the female lead in the French play 'Cyrano de Bergerac'. An old 'Cyrano de Bergerac' poster was hanging in the hotel foyer.
