I am a lifelong atheist, but my main problem with this idea isn't only the word "church", but the word "atheist".

  • I appreciate your thoughts on this. I was just thinking that there could be a day that the word atheism would be without meaning.

I have one concern about your aversion of the word atheist in connection with an organization or community and that is for the people who are ready to leave religion and want to become involved with issues that atheists face (church/state issues, civil rights, ostracism, etc). How are they to recognize compatable banners without the word "atheism"?

  • I think there's a difference between an organization or pressure group which concerns itself with defending the rights and interests of people with some common cause; and a church or community which attempts to promote its own beliefs or ideas in their own right. Atheist pressure groups exist in response to theist activity, which is fine. But a church exists to promote an ideology, whether or not it faces opposition; and atheism has no ideology as such.

  • No need for 'atheist' church!

We already have secular religions such as

    Buddhism

    Secular Humanism

    Secular Judaism.

I guess the closest thing to an "atheist church" is a secular humanist or secular unitarian church.

  • I liked your video. It's very interesting. Some or many Christians tend to condemn atheist. And as far as Christians are suppose to be - it seems to me to condemn persons for not believing would be a conflict of their interest for lack of a better way to express it. It almost seems like athiest are the way the Christians are suppose to be. This is really weird. If there are true Christians following the spirit where are they at? I like to think myself a humanist like you are.

  • We already have atheist charities, in the form of the welfare state. Democratic societies have decided, for a number of reasons, that there is a standard of existence below which humans should not be allowed to fall. This reflects an understading that all human beings are valuable and have the potential to contribute to society; that their skills should not fall into disuse due to systemic unemployment; that providing a minimal existence to all prevents social chaos; etc.

  • Hey Paul, first of all thanks for subscribing.

Very good points on the word "Atheist", depending on the angle from which one looks it can feel quite different. I agree that it is not a good word to get people together under an umbrella eventhough it serves as a good word to set oneself as an individual apart from religious people. I might have to post a follow-up to my video now...

  • "Pressure groups" I had to look that up. Useful. Thank you!

Looking forward to more from you.

  • I love it when people can do that. But I really liked your videos on algorithmic demotion today. You're very articulate in your own interesting way!

  • Yeah-- this was epic. Its like he read my thoughts and made them more articulate.

  • not funny
