The Moroccan government recently ranked Zawiya Ahansal as the second poorest region in Morocco based on access to education, health care, and basic infrastructure such as clean water and electricity. Morocco ranked lowest among the countries of the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), along with Iraq and Yemen, in terms of access, efficiency, gender disparity, and quality of education according to a 2007 World Bank report. One-half of Morocco's population remains illiterate and with over 60% of the population under the age of 30, public access to internet and reading materials is an essential component to successfully increasing the quality of education in remote regions.
