Is Your Work Holy?
Mother Theresa once said something about making our regular every day work and life Holy. I can't find the exact quote right now and I don't remember how she explained this statement. But, in reflecting on the events of the birth of Christ, it strikes me that Joseph is a man who lived that reality.
On my reading of the Bible, I find that Joseph is a good, kind, sweet man.
• After finding that his fiancé, Mary, was three months pregnant, he did what was inconceivable at time, he took her into his home.
• When they were on the road in Bethlehem, he found a place where Mary could safely have her baby.
• When Herod embarked on a murderous plan to kill any future King by slaughtering all of the toddler boys in Bethlehem, Joseph got his family to safety in a foreign country.
• While taking refuge in Egypt, he supported his family by plying his trade as a carpenter.
• After returning to Nazareth, he taught Jesus a trade, carpentry.
Where would Christ be without Joseph? Indeed Joseph made his work holy. Through his work as a father and carpenter, he kept Jesus Christ in this world, literally.
How do you make your work holy? The answer to that is answered with another question: How do you take your faith to work or school with you? Does your Christian faith mold how you act and how you treat others? I would contend that as you practice Christian love and kindness, things around you would change. Seemingly impossible tasks can be tempered with Christian Hope. Frustrating and maddening problems at work can be softened with your Christian patience. Are there opportunities through work or school to do volunteer work?
Don't wait for Sunday to practice your Christianity. Take Christ to work with you. Joseph took his humble life and his humble trade and look what happened. Joseph did his work to keep Christ in this world. Let's do our part today.
