Seven years ago, in 2002, one year before I got interested in radio and long-distance reception, I started listening to foreign stations, mainly because I was fed up with the crap on the local Austrian stations. Slovenian stations from Maribor/Pohorje are very strong in Graz, so I discovered Radio SI, Radio City and others one day. When I went to the eastern part of Styria province (close to the Hungarian border) I tuned in to Hungarian stations like Slager Radio and Danubius Radio. The latter I loved right from the start, as their playlist always differed greatly from Austrian and Slovenian radio. From time to time, there was electronic music in the daytime programming, which was highly unusual (and still is).
Since Radio City Maribor broadcasts on 100.6 MHz (62 km) and has a very strong signal in Graz, reception of Danubius from Kab-hegy 100.5 MHz (165 km) has always been a struggle. There is one corner on Route B65 from Graz to Gleisdorf, where stations from the South and West are weakened. I soon found out that this was the closest place to my house where Danubius came in with an RDS-signal and where Radio City Maribor did not interfere too much.
That's why I started calling it the "Danubius corner", without having an idea where in Hungary the station actually came from. Without speaking a single word of Hungarian, I just enjoyed the good music on my way to eastern Styria. Every time I passed by that corner I would switch to Danubius and keep it locked from that point on. What I liked most was the electronic music program on Fridays (starting at 8pm).
Two weeks ago, I learned that the ORTT (Hungarian authority for FM licenses) took away Slager Radio's and Danubius Radio's nationwide licenses and gave it to some doubtful consortia. Danubius Radio will have to cease operations on November 18, 2009 and will be gone forever. I was really sad when I found out about this.
This short video is nothing special, it's just my personal tribute to the station - thank you Danubius for keeping me entertained on the road (and on vacation in Hungary) for more than seven years!
Danubius Radio - az én rádióm!
I was lucky having been able to listen to Radio Danubius both on its very first day in 1986 and on its very last day on November 18, 2009 - until 12am. 1986 was the year that I started learning German and I really enjoyed that year after year I understood more and more of the news, the commercials and the reports in German. Radio Danubius stayed with me for 23 years and it is a pity that is now belongs to the past. However, most of the staff was taken over by its successor Class FM.

PS:
I remember well the late 80s, when Danubius did broadcast German language news as the only Hungarian station on CCIR, the other stations still were on OIRT-FM.
