  • Good piece, but Liszt was a composer of the Romantic period, and that's more avant-guarde. It's true that Liszt actually wrote an atonal piece called "Bagatelle sans Tonalité", but it doesn't remind me of this sonata either. If this is similar to the music of Liszt, then most politicians are very intelligent.

  • @MINORSECONDXXI

This is not meant to sound as though Liszt wrote it. Why would you assume it was?

  • @John11inch Actually, the theme from 10:16 until 10:43 is taken directly from Liszt's Unstern: Sinistre, Disastro

  • @MINORSECONDXXI Take a look at Xenakis's homage to Ravel (titled A R), too. I get your point, but "in memory of" is more of a dedication in this instance, I think. In my opinion, the only time a composer is obligated to write in the style of someone else is if they say "in the style of" in the title.

  • @John11inch Well, not to say that there is something wrong with it not sounding like Liszt, but it is composed to his memory (in memoriam)...

Anyway, composing a piece in memoriam of somebody is not the same as writing a homage to him/her, so I suppose you are right...

  • @EdwardWhelanPiano Yes... since 1886!

  • Interesting piece, and kind of refreshing. I'd love to see the score. Who's performing and what other works are on the disc (unless it's a live recording)?

  • Powerful, as only music can be.

  • Abounding in allusions to Liszt, no doubt...but quite where I have no frickin idea. Sounds more Messiaenic to me - a remarkably constrained though delicate and clever piece.
