WFMY News 2 - Police K-9 Training

Some local canine handlers are reacting to controversial video of alleged animal abuse. A state trooper lost his job after cell phone video surfaced apparently showing him kicking the dog and leaving the animal hanging.

Former Sgt. Charles Jones, a 12-year veteran in charge of K-9 training for the Highway Patrol, was fired in September after another trooper turned over two 15-second video clips of him suspending his K-9 partner, Ricoh, from a railing and kicking the dog to force it to release a chew toy.

Jones has sued to regain his job, saying he was fired only because members of Gov. Mike Easley's office pressured the Highway Patrol to get rid of him. Several other troopers were accused of other offenses at the time, prompting Easley to order an outside review of the agency.

Rockingham County dog trainers and officer K-9 handlers tell me there's simply no excuse for kicking or hanging the animal.

They say that is not training. While the way they train may be anything but gentle, experts say it's actually fun for the dog.

I would invite you "Puddn" to come meet one of my Lame dogs and the name is not Shilock. AND you are missing the point. There are ways to train dogs to let go and make them want the toy even more. But YOU made a comment about something you obviously know nothing about. Too much of that going on these days. I would invite you to learn about the topic before you make derogatory comments about someone who makes his living doing something you know nothing about

Well I am the "expert" you are talking about who is ridiculous and apparently you have no clue of what you are talking about. You can choke the dog off, but the next time the dog will not even engage. There are better ways, but glad you arent the one training these dogs
