  • The first Backdoor album was one of my favourites. Is Hodgkinson the only surviving original member?

  • Yes he is. Ron Aspery passed on in December 2003 and Tony 'Hicks in August 2006. Their final album together is "Askin' the Way" available from Cultural Foundation.

Colin recently recorded a new album "Back Door Too" with Rod Mason on saxes and Paul Robinson on drums. Keeping the Back Door sound alive ...

  • Recorded: London England, june 3 and 4th, 1972 -Sehr schön!

  • also re-recorded in Brighton for the album "Askin' the Way" released by Cultural Foundation 2003. The band's master work!

  • Is that Tony Hicks from the Hollies?

  • No it's not.

It's Tony hicks the great drummer.

Tony Hicks of the Hollies played guitar (as you probably know)

  • I was there at the billingham arms that night - it was absolutely brilliant - it was just a shame that the crowd wasn't bigger.

  • No argument from me,.... this guy is SMOKIN!

  • this is hallowed ground for me.That Back Door album, 8th Street nights and Askin the Way are always on in my car. Great stuff !

Rod mason has an immpossible task to try and replace Ron Aspery, but he pulls it off. There is no bigger compliment than that.Fantastic stuff. Thanks to the Cultural Foundation for their help.

  • Leren kennen dankzij Ad Visser :-)

  • Ditto!

Sadly I think you're right Ron and Tony are upstairs now Jammin with Charlie Parker and Jaco Pastorius etc ..what a band that must be eh>

    RIP Ron And Tony

  • The odd thing is I've had a promo copy of the Warner's lp since 1974, and it matches the incorrect sequencing of the CD. I've always thought that Lieutenant Loose was the bass solo. They must have corrected it for the actual pressing and then repeated the error during the CD transfer.

  • The soprano sax, looks like a saxello to me.

  • I can remember when I first heard this on John Peel's Top Gear when he got hold of the privately produced album. So raw. Hearing them live was awesome. Never quite as good after they went to the States and did 8th St Nites. Cultfound is right about the original vinyl sides being reversed on the cd. This is definitely Vienna Breakdown, and of course they always finished gigs with Back Door and not Skivadiv which is the last track on the cd.
