If you go in the Tropical Rain Forest section of the Zoo's McNeil Avian Center, this is one of the birds you can get so close to, you won't even need to use your camera's zoom feature.

As you can see, this bird has created a sort of a bare-skin necklace by plucking the feathers around his neck. He is one of the newer inhabitants in the Zoo and has apparently been plucking his neck feathers for quite a while.

Although it looks okay on him, I hope he doesn't start a fashion trend among the other birds in the Tropical Rain Forest!

Note: I have seen both "eclectus parrot" and "electus parrot" on various signs in various places, and even information on the Internet. So the bird in this video is either an electus parrot, or an eclectus parrot, or both. (All I know is that a beautiful parrot by any other name is still a beautiful parrot.)

  • He's a male EClectus parrot (as in being eclectic). The males are green and the females are red and purple with a mostly black beak. The sexes are so different that at one time they were thought to be different species.

  • Thanks for the added information!

  • wow never seen such a beautiful close-up of parrot. we can see the neck and face looks like a helmet. lol

    Thanks

  • Now that you mention it, it does look like a helmet. Maybe that's the effect he was trying to create!

  • His got a desiese

  • what a cute boy!! He's happy too!

  • Poor thing must be bored-scared-or stressed to do that. I have the exact same bird, he even makes the same type of noises. he can sometimes say his name. pretty young so he still makes the baby noises.
